Mandel JCC Presents “Slavery & Freedom” Art Show
lavery & Freedom is an eclectic art exhibition representing the works of 13 local Jewish artists, showcasing a variety of their original, contemporary art works. The exhibit, which takes place at the Mandel JCC and runs through June 15, is presented by The Cleveland Jewish Arts & Culture Lab and The J. Participating artists are part of the third Artist Fellowship that was formed in January 2013 by the Cleveland Jewish Arts & Culture Lab. Rabbi Zachary Truboff, Sara Hurand and the artists met over the course of several months to study the theme of “Slavery & Freedom” using Torah, text study and discussion. Each artist was commissioned to do a work or works in the spirit of the slavery and freedom theme inspired by the learning the group did together. Artists include: Shira Atik, Lisa
S
Beth Allen, Hazel Brown, Hilary Krzywkowski, Deborah Silver, Louis Chaiten, Lisa Yanofsky, Pamela Goodwin, Alice Kiderman, Debbie Moskowitz, Martin Kohn, Even Cooper and Debra Gressel. Here's a little more news about the Beachwood artists: Shira Atik is a Hebrew-English literary translator. Her translations have been published by the Jewish Publication Society, the Institute for the Translation of Hebrew Literature, Zeek magazine, and individual authors. She graduated from Barnard College with a degree in religion, and received her master’s degree in Hebrew literature from New York University. Shira is married to Michael Rothberg and is the mother of Ariel, Carmi, Eitan and Tal. Hazel Brown is a painter and retired human resources professional. Throughout her career, she has regularly studied painting and other
art forms at various venues. She currently studies with Robert Raack (watercolor) and Susan Porges (pastels) while continuing to explore new and different approaches to expression. Her formal education includes an MA in Art History from the University of Chicago, a BA in Art History from the University of Delaware and an MBA from the University of Illinois at Chicago. Pam Goodwin is a creative conceptor, writer, and editor. She grew up in El Paso, Texas, and moved to Cleveland in 1980. A wizard of words, Pam is a senior editor in the creative studios of American Greetings. With almost 32 years’ tenure, she has contributed her concepting, writing, and/or editing skills to every product category that American Greetings manufac-
tures. Additionally, Pam had several of her single-panel cartoon concepts picked up by nationally syndicated cartoonists and published. She lives with two wonderful daughters and an exuberant terrier. The Slavery & Freedom exhibit is free and open to the community during Mandel JCC regular business hours.
