More than a Game – Chasing Dreams: Baseball & Becoming American celebrates baseball heroes on the field and off. On view at the Maltz Museum of Jewish Heritage through September 7, the multimedia exhibition organized by the National Museum of American Jewish History and made possible in part by a major grant from the National Endowment of Humanities: Celebrating 50 Years of Excellence, looks at how issues of culture, race and community play out through the country’s national pastime. The summer promises to be filled with short plays, film screenings, expert panels, player appearances, city tours and other programming related to baseball’s role in society and place in our hearts. Admission to these events includes Chasing Dreams, and visitors are encouraged to arrive early or stay late! Here are some of the events planned through June: Bull Durham and Beer Wednesday, May 6, 5 p.m. (film starts at 7 p.m.) M-Cubed, the Maltz Museum young professionals group, hosts Maltz Museum Plays, Panels and Movie Nights Explore Baseball’s Role, Appeal a screening of Bull Durham, the classic comedic baseball love story that tops ESPN, Sports Illustrated and American Film Institute lists of all-time best sports movies. Enjoy the film, a cold brew and Chasing Dreams: Baseball & Becoming American. Mother’s Day @ Maltz Museum Sunday, May 10, 11 a.m. – 5 p.m. Step up your game and treat mom to a day at the Museum. All mothers receive free museum admission. Take in the Chasing Dreams: Baseball & Becoming American exhibition and bring home an “MVP” (Most Valuable Parent) award you create during a memorable afternoon that will ensure you remain her favorite child. The Kid from Cleveland (1949; 89 minutes) Wednesday, May 20, 7p.m. Enjoy the tale of a down-on-his luck youngster (Russ Tamblyn) helped back to the straight-andnarrow by his favorite team! Revisit the glory days of Cleveland baseball in a film that includes such legends as Bill Veeck, Hank Greenberg, Bob Feller, Satchel Paige and Larry Doby. This screening is followed by a talk-back session led by baseball historian Morris Eckhouse of the Baseball Heritage Museum. Jews, Baseball and The American Dream Wednesday, June 10, 7:30 p.m. An evening of reminiscence, celebration and exploration of the role of America’s pastime in the lives of Jews, from the late 19th century to the present day. Rabbi Roger Klein and sports broadcaster Les Levine share their love of the sport and look at how baseball has dealt with some of the major issues in American society, such as integration and capital vs. labor. Father’s Day @ Maltz Museum Sunday, June 21, 11 a.m. – 5 p.m. Make this Father’s Day special with an outing that will knock it out of the park. All dads receive free musum admission. You’re Out: LGBTQ and Sport in America Wednesday, June 24, 7 p.m. How has sport been a mirror of our society? From the shattering of the color barrier in baseball to Michael Sam’s coming out prior to the 2014 NFL draft, we see our best and worst selves. This moderated panel, featuring Team Cleveland’s Scott Swaggerty, explores the role of sport as bellwether or lagging indicator of social change in relation to the LGBTQ community. Gross Schechter Students Place at University of Akron Science Day Brian and Andrew Caplan, 8th grade Gross Schechter students from Beachwood, presented and placed at the 67th annual Western Reserve District 5 Science Day at the University of Akron. Brian Caplan won CSU Department of Physics Award, 2nd Place Broadcom MASTERS Award and a Superior rating for his "Water's Cohesion" project. Andrew Caplan earned 2nd Place William R. Sweet Award for Outstanding Chemistry Project and Superior rating for his "Bell Pepper Pigments" project. Both students will go on to the State Science Day competition at Ohio State University on May 16. Congratulations go to both of them. The Science and Engineering Team at Gross Schechter is led by science teacher Matt Norton. The Capital Grille Plans to Open at Legacy Village Legacy Village recently announced that plans are underway for the addition of the award winning restaurant, The Capital Grille. This first-to-the-market, 9,000 square-foot fine dining establishment is scheduled to open at Legacy Village in 2016. The Capital Grille will be adjacent to Legacy Village's main entrance, which is located directly off of Cedar Road. The news of The Capital Grille joining the tenant mix at Legacy Village comes just weeks after several other exciting announcements, including plans for Ohio’s first L.L. Bean retail store, a brand new 8,600 square-foot Talbots store and expansion plans which include a new 135-room Hyatt Place Hotel and a five-story, 355-space parking garage with walkway access to Main Street. The new Talbots store is expected to open in May, directly across from their current location on the corner of Legacy Court next to White House/Black Market. L.L.
