Center now offers
shared medical
appointments (SMAs)
for weight loss.
Nayyer Homa Varghai,
MD, a primary care
physician, oversees
the SMA designed to
help participants reach and maintain their
target weight.
To participate, individuals must have
a body mass index (BMI) of 28 or higher
(considered overweight). Participants
typically attend once a month.
The weight loss SMA team Dr. Varghai,
a pharmacist, a dietitian and two support
staff participates in every session.
Sessions include group discussion and
education focused on individual strengths
and weaknesses, different types of diets,
medication use, and lifestyle changes
including healthy diet and exercise.
"We encourage participants to continue
in the SMA as long as they are making
progress on their weight loss journey,"
says Dr. Varghai. "It could take up to a
year, maybe more, for some to reach and
maintain their target weight."
Health insurance typically covers the
SMA cost; however, patients should verify
coverage with their insurance provider before
starting the program.
