Most of us know we should take steps
to maintain our overall health. But what
about safeguarding your precious sight?
According to Scott Wagenberg, MD, it
is especially important to care for your
corneas, the transparent portion of each
eye that provides most of the eye's
focusing power. "The number one tip I
give people for maintaining good corneal health is to never
sleep with contact lenses," says Dr. Wagenberg, a corneal
surgeon and general ophthalmologist with Cleveland Clinic's
Cole Eye Institute at Hillcrest Hospital. "This reduces oxygen
supply to the eye, which can lead to infection." The doctor
notes that you should also wear sunglasses outside and see
an eye doctor every couple of years.
If one of your corneas becomes damaged or unhealthy, there
may be a good solution thanks to advances in corneal
surgery. Dr. Wagenberg, an international leader in corneal
surgery, has demonstrated the latest techniques live in front of
hundreds of other physicians.
The groundbreaking surgery, called DMEK, was first
performed two years ago and offers fast, near-complete visual
restoration for patients with certain corneal disorders. "I had
an 85-year-old patient who was reluctant to have surgery on
his left eye because he lost all the vision in his right eye seven
years ago due to a complication of a full corneal transplant,"
says Dr. Wagenberg, who performs three to four DMEK
surgeries a week. "He decided to take the risk and, after
surgery, his vision soon went from 20/100 to 20/40."
Conventional transplant techniques involve removing the
cornea's entire thickness. With DMEK, only the innermost
layer is replaced, leaving the cornea closer to its original state.
"While DMEK is the most difficult surgery to perform, it's worth
it," says Dr. Wagenberg. "It requires no stitches and restores
vision faster with fewer aberrations and complications."
Performed on an outpatient basis, DMEK surgery takes about
an hour. "After the procedure, you lie on your back for an hour
before going home," explains Dr. Wagenberg. "For a few days,
your vision is blurry, but then it's dramatically improved."
