BHS Student Combines Sports with Cancer Fundraising
By June Scharf Griffin Davis, a BHS junior who plays on the soccer team and is a kicker for the football team, scores in multiple ways every time he puts points on the board. He’s running a campaign to raise money for childhood cancer research, and every pledge-per-point or straight donation helps him to attain his goal of raising $1,000. He is connected with the organization called Kick It for Cancer, an offshoot of the locally-based Flashes of Hope charity. He discovered Kick It this past summer at a soccer camp hosted at John Carroll University. He signed up to participate, and once he learned through the organization’s email how pediatric cancer research is severely underfunded, he agreed to kick off his own fundraising efforts. “I can help save lives. Why wouldn’t I do it?” he states. He says he witnessed cancer in his own family – all his grandparents – so he knows the toll it takes. Griffin is the son of Stacey and Todd Davis. “I feel a responsibility to help. Plus, I feel lucky that I don’t have cancer.” He has received support from friends, coaches, teachers and relatives, and his campaign will be ongoing, but the points portion will end with the completion of his soccer and football seasons. Raising funds based on scoring hasn’t added any more pressure to his performance, he says. Instead, he believes it gives him motivation. Those interested in contributing to Griffin’s campaign can access it on the website Kick-It.org, then by clicking on “support an event or individual,” then by entering Griffin’s name. According to Allison Clarke, Kick It founder, 83% of funds raised are contributed to potential treatments vetted by being partnered with medical advisory boards involved with research projects and clinical trials nationwide. In 2014, Kick It funded research studies at 13 institutions, which are listed on the charity’s website.
