H CITY COUNCIL H MARTIN HORWITZ Beachwood is my home. For more than 50 years, it’s where I have lived and worked, and where my wife, Sandi, and I raised our two children, Gayle and Justin. Like you, I am proud of Beachwood’s excellent city services, vibrant businesses, outstanding schools, and, most importantly, its warm community of friends and neighbors. But as a councilman for the last four years, and a Board of Education member for 16 years before that, I know that Beachwood faces challenges. Neighboring cities are competing with us for new businesses. There is constant pressure to deliver superior services at the lowest costs. We need to embrace the growing diversity of our population. For Beachwood to thrive in the future, we must become the model for innovation, sustainability, responsiveness, and ethical governance. In my first term on council, I have already helped Beachwood start to meet these goals. I supported the construction of almost 700 new luxury apartments and the expansion of Wiggins Place and Menorah Park. I encouraged the creation of a new full-time Economic Development Department, which has brought dozens of new companies, two world headquarters and increased tax revenue to Beachwood. I led council in revising long-standing spending practices for meals and charitable events, and in freezing the mayor’s salary and eliminating vacation pay, moves that resulted in savings. To learn about the many other projects I’ve supported, please visit my website: www. HorwitzforBeachwood.com. In my second term, my priority is to continue to drive transparency and accountability. I want to televise our council meetings and make our spending records more accessible. To make Beachwood the leader in workability and livability, I want the city to provide high-speed broadband for our residents and businesses. I would also like Beachwood to help our seniors and residents with disabilities get their trash to the curb, increase recycling at the Village and apartments, build neighborhood unity through block parties and create a dog park. Finally, I want to find new ways to involve residents in city decision-making. Let’s draw on the expertise of our many local experts and get more people invested in Beachwood’s success. Together, we can build a stronger community ready for tomorrow’s challenges. I would be honored to provide leadership for Beachwood’s second century and appreciate your vote on November 3rd. Let’s draw on the expertise of our many local experts and get more people invested in Beachwood’s success. H CITY COUNCIL H BARB JANOVITZ I believe that diversity, independence and integrity matter. I am proud of my deep roots in our community. After graduating from Beachwood High School, I received degrees from the Wharton School of Business and New York University School of Law, and I returned to Beachwood because I knew it was the best place to raise a family as I built my law career. Beachwood is becoming an increasingly diverse community, and this diversity should be reflected in our local government so that city leadership is representative of the community it serves. There has not been a woman on City Council since 2001. In order to best solve problems and develop innovative ideas, it is critical to have qualified individuals from diverse backgrounds, such as gender, age and race, who can offer different and fresh perspectives. I am committed to serving my community. During the past two decades, I have held appointed leadership roles on numerous nonprofit boards, both in Beachwood and in the greater Cleveland community. I am on the boards of The Montefiore Foundation, The Center for Community Solutions, The Rose Centers for Aging Well and The Benjamin Rose Institute on Aging. I have seen firsthand that boards work best when members can provide varied points of view. In my board work, I am deeply involved in making difficult decisions about organizational budgets and the proper allocation of funds, strategic development and collaboration with other organizations. I have learned how to build consensus for my ideas, to give thoughtful, deliberate and respectful consideration to the ideas of others, and to engage individuals in a meaningful way. These are skills I will use as a member of council. As an estate planning attorney who chairs the estate planning group at the Reminger law firm, I am respected for my honesty, integrity and business acumen. My client relationships foster trust and open communication, qualities which I believe are critical to Beachwood. I have met many of you as I knocked on more than 3,000 doors, and I have learned of your hopes for Beachwood. We are proud of our city’s accomplishments, but also look forward to the future. I am excited about the opportunity to work with you to strengthen and unite our community. My client relationships foster trust and open communication, qualities which I believe are critical to Beachwood. October 2015 n Beachwood Buzz 51
