CWRU’s Siegal Lifelong Learning Program’s Northeast Ohio Public Policy Series discusses the housing market
The Laura and Alvin Siegal Lifelong Learning Program at Case Western Reserve University on Wednesday, Oct. 7, will host the fourth session of its four-part Northeast Ohio Public Policy Series on critical regional issues. The topic is the region’s housing market. The 7 p.m. session at the Siegal Facility in Beachwood, 26500 Shaker Blvd., is free and open to the public. The topic: Housing Crisis in Northeast Ohio—Where Are We in 2015? Participants include James Rokakis, Former Cuyahoga County treasurer, Cleveland councilman, director Thriving Communities Institute; Thomas Bier, senior fellow; and Maxine Goodman, Levin College of Urban Affairs, Cleveland State University. The moderator is Brent Larkin, The Plain Dealer. Northeast Ohio was one of the hardest hit housing markets in recent years. The market has begun to recover, but housing values and real estate taxes remain two of the most important economic issues’ facing residents today. This forum will discuss current home prices, new construction, demolitions and foreclosures and home ownership versus renting. Substance Abuse – Life, Death and Sometimes Back to Life Again
In 2014, there were 198 deaths due to heroin in Cuyahoga County. Approximately 50 percent of those deaths were in the suburbs. Most addicts get painkillers from medicine cabinets of friends and family. Much remains unknown and misunderstood about substance abuse. From the emergency room to the morgue, Jennifer Keirn gets to the heart of what these professionals see in our local hospitals and treatment centers while treating addicts. Some patients are lucky enough to live thanks to drugs like Naloxone while others leave families devastated as they learn of a loved one's death. Substance Abuse – Working Towards the Future: What’s Being Done to Help? Thursday, Oct. 15 at 7 pm This panel discussion will offer feedback from professionals about the procedures that have been established to help those affected by substance abuse and in some cases save an addict. Panelists will also share perspectives on the future outlook of this crisis.
