Common colds
and the flu are
caused by viruses
that affect the
upper respiratory
system the nose,
mouth, throat and
lungs. Both have
similar symptoms,
though the symptoms of a cold are
usually milder and develop more slowly
than flu symptoms.
"Unfortunately, there are no
medicines that will actually cure a cold
or the flu," says Anindita Ghosh, MD,
a Cleveland Clinic internal medicine
physician who provides patient care at
Beachwood Family Health and Surgery
Center. "A flu shot may not prevent you
from getting the flu, but it will decrease
symptoms if you do."
Antibiotics don't work on viruses;
however, if you have a cold or the flu,
these over-the-counter medicines can
help make symptoms more bearable:
· Analgesics containing acetaminophen
or ibuprofen to reduce fever and pain.
· Antihistamines to dry out the nose.
· Decongestants to relieve a stuffy,
clogged nose.
· Expectorants to loosen mucus and
make blowing your nose easier.
· Cough medicines to reduce coughing.
· Throat lozenges to ease sore throat
pain.
"When it comes to colds and flu,
prevention is really the best medicine.
The Centers for Disease Control
recommend that everyone age six
months or older get an annual flu shot.
It's even more important for those with
other health problems," says Dr. Ghosh.
"Another simple step toward staying
healthy is to wash your hands it's the
single most important thing we can do
to stop the spread of disease."
