NCJW/Cleveland Raises
Awareness and Takes Action
Lois Zaas Advocacy Lecture Focuses on Foster Care
National Council of Jewish Women/Cleveland recently held its annual
Lois Zaas Memorial Advocacy Lecture at which author Paula McLain and
Bellefaire COO Jeff Lox spoke about "Aging Out of Foster Care: Overcom-
ing the Odds." This forum featured McLain's personal experience in foster
care and Lox's experience with foster children and the need for more
foster families.
"There are 1,600 children in foster care in Cuyahoga County who are
susceptible to poverty, homelessness and human trafficking when they
age out," said Linda Barnett, president, NCJW/Cleveland. "NCJW has de-
veloped programs with a focus on foster care to educate the community
and serve these young people."
As an advocacy event, each attendee was encouraged to write her
congress person to pass Ohio HB 50 raising the age of aging out of foster
care from 18 to 21. HB 50 passed the house and is now with the Ohio
Senate, where additional letters are being sent.
Event attendees were asked to bring stuffed animals to be donated.
Three hundred were collected.
