Arbor Day 2015
F
or the 19th consecutive year, The City of Beachwood earned the honor of “Tree City USA” by the Arbor Day Foundation for its commitment to effective urban forest management. On Friday, April 24, the City of Beachwood and Beachwood Historical Society held an Arbor Day celebration at the Beachwood Family Aquatic Center at which European Beech trees were planted. The event attracted residents, city and school officials, and preschoolers from both Beach-
wood and Cleveland. Following a ceremony and the plantings, snacks were provided and each student was given a sapling to plant at home. Because of generous support of a Cuyahoga Arts and Culture Grant, funds were available for Rosemary Nemeth, president of the Beachwood Historical Society, to visit Beachwood preschool classes to teach students about Arbor Day and prepare them for the actual ceremony. The grant also covered the
cost of “Beechy,” created by Alison Hirsch, the Service Department's administrative assistant. Keep your eyes open for Beechy who is sure to be seen at future city events. In celebration of Arbor Day 2015 and Beachwood’s 100th anniversary, additional trees will be planted throughout the community. Residents are also encouraged to support the conservation of forests and woodlands on their own properties. “Our City's longtime commit-
ment to urban forestry reflects the importance we place on trees and their vital role in our community,” said Mayor Merle S. Gorden. “Trees benefit the health of our residents, our environment and our economy. As a Tree City USA community, we strive to become a more sustainable, eco-friendly city.”
